Shivz Photography: Shooting smooth and silky Waterfalls!!

Recently i uploaded a picture of Monkey Waterfalls (Valparai) and i received lot of queries as to whether i photo shopped it since it was looking very unrealistic. So here is the camera technique used to capture waterfalls like this...

Shutter Speed:

You need to have a compact camera or a DSLR or a point shoot which would allow you to adjust shutter speed of the camera. If you shoot with a faster shutter speed (eg: 1/600) you might get a picture something like this where you can freeze all the water splashes and drops:

But if you slow down the shutter speed to either 3 secs or 5 secs you can capture the entire motion of water for that particular time frame. [Caution] When you are taking photographs using slow shutter speeds there will be lot of shakes in the pictures so try to use a tripod to minimize shakes. Also reduce the camera exposure or else it might blow out the picture... everything will be a bright white and you will lose the picture!!

and finally here is the original pic of Monkey Waterfalls:

I cropped the picture and adjusted brightness, contrast, vibrance and saturation in Lightroom and here is the final processed picture:

EXIF data:

Shutter Speed: 2 secs
Exposure Comp: -5 steps
Aperture: F/36
Focal Length: 55mm
